dermatology questions

Aging happens without exception.  Unfortunately, I am finding the skin on my face gets more and more red blotches as I get older.  I realize this is my Scottish heritage coming through as the grandparents on my father’s side had the same problem. In the past, they just accepted it as a fact of life.  With all the advances in modern medicine, I would like to take care of the blotches.  I would like to find what healthy skin solutions are available to help my rid me of the red.

Dr. Dr. Schultz gives online dermatology advice at DermTV.  In episode #50, “How to Treat Facial Redness and Red Blotches” he talks specifically about the options available to people like me.  His frank open manner is easy to understand and while he doesn’t always have the solution I want to hear, he never tries to create a false sense of hope in procedures that simply don’t work.  Also, he tries to cover the pros and cons for the healthy skin solutions available.  As in the case of red blotches, he speaks about several of the current methods, makeup, caffeine treatments, cortisone skin ointments and laser surgery.

According to this dermatologist’s advice, caffeine attempts to constrict the blood vessels and reduce the blotchiness. However, this doesn’t really work.  Cortisone does work to restrict the blood vessels, but cannot be use long term because of the side effects - thinner skin and ultimately more broken blood vessels creating more blotches.  Dr. Dr. Schultz says that there are really only two options.  In terms of makeup he recommends using a green based makeup to cover up the blotches as green and red are opposites on the color spectrum and so cancel each other out.But I look terrible in green makeup.  For me the only solution is laser surgery - or accepting that older skin is still healthy skin.  Again, it isn’t necessarily news I wanted to hear, but I sure appreciate the honesty with which Dr Schultz gives his dermatologist advice.

He hopes that in the future a topical skin solution will be developed to help reduce red blotchy skin.Currently, there are only two healthy skin solutions available and neither are great.  But I’d rather know the truth than be frustrated months down the line, having been sold a bill of goods and still not having any improvement.
