Why No Ordinary Skin Care Regime Will Do For Athletes
Subscribe To Our FeedMost people have a skin care regime that they have either developed themselves, been told by beauty experts about or have copied from the other people. Once you find a skin care process that works for you, you tend to stick with it and use the same skin care and beauty products for a while. It is a lot more difficult if you are an athlete however. There really are not very many products suitable specifically for athletes and not very many knowledagable experts around either on TV or in shops to help us out.
There are myriad reasons that athletes cannot rely on ordinary skincare routines. The skin is exposed to a layer of sweat covering it for more of the time than most people have. Their skin is subject the the harsh conditions of the outside and also to large fluctuations in temperature. There hormone levels can fluctuate between extremes and can through off the natural production regulation of oil and sebum production, which can lead to various skin problems. Lastly, they are much more likely to pick up scrapes, cuts, bruises and all sorts of other damage to their skin whilst training and competing.
So what is the best advice for athletes? “Natural products” argues Prof Steve Thompson of Loughborough University’s Sports Science Department. He argues that products sourced directly from the natural environment were used a couple of hundred years ago when people had much more active lifestyles and Prof Thompson says they had it right. “when you skin is subject to such extreme changes in environment, and so much is demanded of it to maintain the body’s equilibrium, you cannot expect synthetic products to do any good”.The university tests showed that products from nature where much better for skin than those containing sodium lauryl sulphate, parabens, detergents or dyes. The leading natural ingredients discovered were Witch Hazel for clearing up spots, Peppermint for promoting relaxation of the muscles and circulation, and Lavender that aided the healing of bruises and cuts
